Installation Specifications

Glue Down Tile Installation Instructions

INSTALLING ON CONCRETE SUB-FLOOR

  • Cork Tiles can be installed over concrete on or above grade.
  • Concrete floors must be free of dirt and grease; and need to be smooth, dry, level (1/8” over 10’) and flat.
  • All cracks, holes must be patched with Portland cement based compound. Follow compound manufacturer's instructions.
  • DO NOT use gypsum base compounds.
  • Check concrete slab for moisture with Calcium Chloride moisture test. Moisture content cannot be more than 3 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft. per 24 hours.

INSTALLING ON UNDERLAYMENT PLYWOOD

  • Plywood must be inspected as sub-floor plywood. Install smooth ¼” underlayment plywood, fill cracks and sand uneven areas.
  • Sub floor must not exceed 14% moisture content. Check basements and under floor crawl spaces to be sure they are dry and well ventilated. For buildings with crawl spaces, install ground cover of 6 mil polyethylene sheets, overlap seams 8", and tape the sheets together.
  • Cork tiles cannot be installed over any other surfaces than the ones above mentioned.

CORK TILES MUST BE ACCLIMATED

  • Store cork tiles in the box in unopened packages in the center of the job site for a minimum of 48 hours.
  • During storage and installation, maintain temperature and relative humidity to level consistent with conditions that will prevail when building is occupied.
  • Heating or air conditioning should be used for an appropriate length of time prior to and during installation. With improper acclimation, the floor could noticeably expand or contract after installation.

IN-FLOOR RADIANT HEATING SYSTEMS

  • With radiant heat, heat source is directly beneath the floor covering unlike a home with standard heating system. Floating floors move as a unit as they respond to changes in heat and humidity. Therefore, Nova highly recommends the use of Nova Cork Floating Floors to ensure a successful installation in conjunction with radiant heating.
  • However, cork tiles can be installed as long as customer understands that joints between tiles could become more visible during heating season.
  • For this installation, once slab has cured, turn heat on, regardless of season, and leave it on for at least 5-6 days before installation.
  • Maximum surface temperature should never be more than 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).
  • Gluing directly on low-density concrete slab (less than 3,000 psi) is not recommended.

APPLICATION OF ADHESIVE

  • Begin by spreading DriTac 6200 adhesive on the sub floor using the appropriate trowel (3/32"x3/32"x3/32" v notch.) and allow the adhesive to completely dry. It will change from white to translucent when dry.
  • Stay off adhesive while it is drying. Once adhesive is dry, that section of installation must be completed within one hour by applying a thin coat of adhesive to the back of the cork with a paint brush or paint roller.
  • Allow adhesive on the back of the cork to flash for approximately 15 minutes before installing the tiles.
  • Never lay tiles into wet adhesive. Always test for proper adhesion prior to proceeding with the installation. If the tiles do not seem to adhere properly over a very porous substrate, it will be necessary to apply a second coat of adhesive.

LAYING CORK TILES

  • Shuffle cork tiles for best visual mix and identify possible manufacturing defects. Shade variations are inherent in cork and installer must accept liability for installing defective material and blending the shades.
  • Mix cork tiles from various cartons to maintain natural color and pattern variation.
  • Allow ¼" expansion space between finished floor and all walls, thresholds, water pipes and other vertical surfaces. Failure to provide adequate expansion space will result in installation failure.
  • When moisture level in the environment is low, tiles should not be positioned too tightly against one another.
  • When moisture level is high, tiles should be installed tightly. When cork tile is properly in place, apply pressure on entire tile surface, using 100-pound floor roller during and immediately after installation.

AFTER INSTALLATION

  • Allow glue to set for at least 24 hours before walking on the floor. After 24 hours you may install molding, trim, transition pieces, and/or reducer strips as needed.
  • If dried adhesive is found on the surface of the floor, it can be removed with a damp cloth. Use any hardwood floor cleaner or well wrung-out damp mop to clean the floor.

SEALING THE FLOOR

  • Nova Cork tiles are factory finished with hard wax oil. Nova recommends a professional to apply polish in accordance with manufacturer'’ guidelines. See the recommendations section for proper manufacturers list.

Warranty Information

Nova Cork Floors Warranty

WEAR THROUGH WARRANTY

All Nova Cork and Linoleum Floorings are covered by a 20 Year Residential Wear Warranty and 10 Year Commercial Wear Warranty. This warranty applies to the original end user and covers only approved product applications. Please note that the warranty is valid from the date of purchase as shown on the consumer's invoice. If any manufacturing defect occurs, Nova will issue a credit to the store on the original purchase of the product for replacement. Credit applies to material and does not include labor since it is the responsibility of the installer to determine suitability of material prior to installation.

RESTRICTIONS

The guarantee against wear is restricted to wear on the surface of the boards. The wear must be readily visible and cover a minimum of approximately 10% of the installed floor. Gloss reduction is not considered wear. This warranty is only valid if proper maintenance procedures are followed. Check with Nova for detailed information.

EXCLUSIONS

The following are expressly excluded from the present guarantee:

  1. Defects or damage caused by installation that does not comply with NovaCork recommended installation procedures. Any failure, as a result of improper installation, is the sole responsibility of the flooring contractor and/or installer.
  2. Problems due to moisture, mildew, alkaline substances, hydrostatic pressure, expansion and contraction between planks.
  3. Inadequate product choice for the flooring use conditions.
  4. Improper or not recommended dressings.
  5. Noncompliance with installation instructions and maintenance guidelines as recommended by Nova Distinctive Floors. Manufacturer cannot assume responsibility for the suitability of flooring material and accompanying products for each individual installation, as manufacturer has no control over the installer's proper application. Should an individual piece be doubtful as to appearance or dimension the installer should not use this piece. Failure to apply protective coating in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines may result in irreparable damage to the cork. Such damage is not covered.
  6. Damage due to improper maintenance. Refer to Nova Distinctive Floors Maintenance Instructions or call Nova Distinctive Floors for recommended products.
  7. Unapproved modification or repair.
  8. Damage due to exposure to excessive heat, cold or dryness (It is recommended that the relative humidity in a home stay in the healthy range of 40-60% throughout the year. To accomplish this, it may require the use of a de-humidifier or a humidifier depending on the condition).
  9. Warranty does not cover cracking, warping, soiling or abuse caused by items such as roller skates, stiletto heels, golf shoes or pets.
  10. Accidents or misuse.
  11. Labor on material installed with manufacturing defects.
  12. Dissatisfaction in color, shade or texture variations from samples or printed color illustrations. Since cork is a natural product it is expected to have color variation due to age of product; exposure to UV light and/or sunlight, therefore it is not a manufacturing defect. Shuffling is required.
  13. Exposure to UV light or sunlight will cause color variation/fading. Use draperies where possible or cure it with a UV finish product. Area rugs and large furniture will block light exposure and cause uneven coloration. To minimize this, furnishing and floor coverings should be moved periodically.
  14. Damage due to stains, scratches, gouges, scuffs, punctures, tears, fading, indentations, burns, lack of proper furniture rests, improper storage or other incident such as fire, flood (also leaky plumbing, overflowing of sinks or similar water damage) or abuse. -- Note: Sliding heavy furniture or appliances may permanently damage your Nova Cork Flooring Problems due to moisture, mildew, alkaline substances or hydrostatic pressure.
